Pawleys Island is one of the oldest beach resorts on the east coast of the United States. It’s original inhabitants settled here in the 1700s, getting away from the rivers to spend a healthier summer near the coast. The families of rice planters that owned lavish plantations would come here to get away from the rivers during the warmer months. They would stay at Pawleys Island until the first frosts of November. There are twelve residences in the historic district
